LGBTQ+ Sub-SCOTUS

Join LGBTQ+ Lawyers LA on Thursday, August 20, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. for the next installment of our popular "LGBTQ+ SCOTUS" series of educational, timely, and interesting CLEs

This activity is approved for 1.0 hours of general MCLE credit for California Attorneys. FREE for members.

In Adams v. School Board of St. Johns County, Florida, the Eleventh Circuit decided that Drew Adams had a right to the boys’ restroom at his high school.  That circuit joins others, which have found that discrimination in access to restrooms and locker rooms at school violates Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972.  The presenter, Dimitri Portnoi, will review the decision, the state of transgender student access across the country, and discuss the particularly virulent offensive dissent by the Chief Judge of the Eleventh Circuit.

Tara Borelli is Counsel in Lambda Legal’s Southern Regional Office in Atlanta, Georgia. Lambda Legal is the oldest and largest national legal organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and people with HIV. Borelli’s work focuses on bringing test cases to advance equality and liberty for all LGBT people. Borelli is lead counsel in Adams v. St. Johns County School Board, Fla., seeking equal access to restrooms for transgender students. Borelli is a member of the state bars of Georgia, California, and Washington.

Paul D. Castillo is Counsel and Students’ Rights Strategist in the South Central Regional Office of Lambda Legal, in Dallas, Texas. Prior to joining Lambda Legal, Castillo enforced federal civil rights statutes, including Title IX, for the United States Department of Education, Office or Civil Rights (OCR). As regional civil rights attorney for OCR, Castillo ensured equal access to education for students at elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities. Castillo is a core part of the legal team in Adams v. St. Johns County School Board, Fla., and leads Lambda Legal’s work nationally to secure equal educational opportunity for LGBTQ students in schools. Castillo is a member of the state bars of Texas and Ohio.

Dimitri Portnoi is an experienced attorney experienced in litigating issues of civil rights, constitutional law, and appellate issues. He is a veteran of multiple civil rights battles relevant to the LGBTQ+ community, including the challenges to Nevada’s discriminatory same-sex marriage law, the anti-transgender laws of multiple states, and laws restricting reproductive rights. A sample of the organizations Dimitri has represented or partnered with include Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and many others. Outside of his pro bono representations, Dimitri has a diverse practice representing and counseling clients in complex trial and appellate litigation, First Amendment and other constitutional issues, and appellate litigation.

Zoom instructions will be included in the email confirming registration.
