Gender Identity Basics and the State of Transgender Rights

The LGBTQ+ Lawyers Association of LA with the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Diversity in the Profession Section is proud to offer this highly-informative MCLE to our members & friends.
In connection with Transgender Day of Visibility, we hope you will join us for an informative, timely presentation by Judge Dean Hansell, who will provide an overview of the actions recently taken by the federal executive brand and various legislatures that affect the rights of transgender individuals and the responses to those actions. Additionally, by way of orientation, Judge Hansell will present information about basic gender identity concepts such as the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation and transgender and cisgender.
Attendance is FREE to active LGBTQ+ Lawyers Association of LA and LACBA DIP Section members and members of sibling LGBTQ+ Lawyer organizations, and only $25 for non-members (it pays to be a member!).
Presented by Judge Dean Hansell (he/him/his).
Judge Dean Hansell is a highly respected member of the California Superior Court in Los Angeles County. Appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in 2016, he is a long cause judge in family law. In addition to his judicial role, Judge Hansell has held significant positions within the legal community.
Before his judicial career, Judge Hansell was a partner at Hogan Lovells and Dewey & LeBoeuf law firms. He also has an impressive history of civic engagement. In addition, Judge Hansell has been involved in various community organizations and initiatives. Including his past service as Co-Chair of the Los Angeles LGBT Center, Co-Chair of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD/LA), and Chair of the Antitrust Section for the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He also served as Chair of the UCLA School of Public Health Dean's Advisory Board and was a Trustee of Denison University.
A prolific writer, Judge Hansell has authored around 30 articles and book chapters, plus the book "The Law of Reinsurance," published by Thomson Reuters (West Publications) in 2023.
Online registration WITH BAR NUMBER is required to attend and obtain MCLE Credit. This class is eligible for 1.0 hour of MCLE Elimination of Bias Credit. The LGBTQ+ Bar Association of Los Angeles is State Bar of California MCLE provider.
